Bramhall 2nd XI vs Cheadle – 20/05/17

Andrew Reynolds Senior Match Reports

The first really damp Saturday of the season saw the 2nd team welcome Cheadle to Church Lane. Steady, though only briefly heavy, rain meant that play finally got underway shortly before 3pm, after an earlier attempt to start was stymied as rain reappeared before a ball could be bowled. In a game shortened to 32 overs a side, Bramhall had opted to field first once the skipper had unexpectedly won the toss!
3 early wickets – 2 for Chris Heppell and 1 for Stuart Stoneman – looked to have put Bramhall in a strong position as Cheadle slipped to 18-3. But with Stoneman the only bowler maintaining pressure on the batsmen, the fourth wicket partnership between Aaron wall and Seb Burchell proved to be the most significant partnership of the game. They put on 132, and despite 3 quick wickets at the end of the Cheadle innings, their total of 155-6 set Bramhall a reasonable target.
The Bramhall innings never really built any momentum, as the experience of Tony Whiteley kept the scoring rate down, whilst also snaring 3 wickets. The shortened length of the game meant that Bramhall were never likely to lose, but equally never threatened to win the game. Only Ellie Mason batted with any real assurance, as she finished the game on 45 not out, resisting the attacking efforts of the Cheadle team.
Batting second and failing to win is a recipe for a very limited number of points, and Bramhall picked up 7, whilst Cheadle took 13.
